Washington, D.C. (May 20, 2011) -- Dish Network yesterday began to
reveal how it plans to use its new acquisition Blockbuster Video to
generate more sales for its satellite TV service.

The company said it will offer a free 3-month trial of Blockbuster's
DVD-by-mail service to new Dish Network customers. The offer, which is
good until August 10, requires the new customer to actually activate
Dish's service and order "qualifying" programming. (In a press release,
Dish did not elaborate on what constituted "qualifying" programming.)

However, once you jump through those hoops, your 3-month trial will
include Blu-ray rentals for no additional charge (Netflix charges $2 a
month extra to get Blu-ray); in-store exchanges (assuming you can find a
Blockbuster store still open in your neighborhood; there are about 1,000
left in the United States); more than 100,000 titles to choose from; and
no late fees.

Additionally, many video releases that are not available on Netflix for
28 days after their debut are available on Blockbuster immediately.

When Dish purchased Blockbuster last month for $320 million in a
bankruptcy auction, the company said it planned to use the one-time
video rental giant in various cross-promotions to help both Blockbuster
and Dish. It would appear that Dish wants to use Blockbuster to strength
its standing as a movie-oriented service.
"We are pleased to introduce a DISH Network promotion with Blockbuster,"
said Ira Bahr, chief marketing officer for DISH Network. "DISH Network
now offers more than twice as many movie choices as any other TV
provider. If you love movies, you're going to love DISH Network."
