Washington, D.C. (August 13, 2012) -- Plasma TV sales, which have been
showing signs of a comeback, are slipping again, according to a new
study from IHS iSuppli.

Home Media Magazine writes that the research firm found that Plasma's
market share was 13.3 percent in July, its lowest point since the first
quarter of 2011 when it reached 11.6 percent. However, Plasma makers
were feeling better about the category's June market share of 14.9
percent -- and improved sales in the second half of last year.

"Despite a brief resurgence in popularity during the second half of last
year, the U.S. Plasma business is undoubtedly a market on the decline,”
said Edward Border, analyst for TV technology at IHS. “While this
deterioration is part of a long-term global trend, the drop in plasma
sales in the U.S. in 2012 is also due to consistently elevated pricing.
The decrease in sales has reduced plasma’s market share, allowing LCD
TVs — Plasma’s traditional rivals — to further their dominance in the
overall U.S. TV space.”

Several years ago, Plasma was considered the industry's style and
commercial leader. However, LCD makers were first to market with new
1080p sets and lower prices for bigger-screen models. The LCD soon
passed Plasma in overall sales despite a general consensus among tech
writers that Plasma offers a better picture.
