The word "tweet" has been added to the Oxford English Dictionary.

"The noun and verb tweet (in the social-networking sense) has just been
added to the OED," said chief editor of the Oxford English Dictionary,
John Simpson. "This breaks at least one OED rule, namely that a new word
needs to be current for ten years before consideration for inclusion.
But it seems to be catching on."

"Tweet" has been around for less than a decade, which usually would not
warrant the word's inclusion into the dictionary. The word represents
each 140-character Twitter submission. The website, as well as the OED
now request that "Tweet" be capitalized as a part of the brand.

According to Daily Mail, Twitter has become such an important part of
daily life that the dictionary's editors were willing to bend their own
rules to include "Tweet" in the OED. Weirdly enough, the OED already
added "retweet" back in 2011.

The word is directly associated with Twitter's symbol - a little blue
bird - which is universally recognized. Twitter is an online social
networking service and micro-blogging service launched in 2006. The
social media platform now has over 500 million registered users as of
2012. Twitter is now one of the top ten most visited websites on the
internet.

Other recent additions to the OED include "big data", "e-reader", and
"stream", all of which pertain to the internet.
