Washington, D.C. (February 26, 2015) - Nickelodeon said yesterday that
it will launch a subscription streaming service for pre-schoolers on
March 5 and it will cost $5.99 a month, writes Variety.
Called Noggin, the service will not include advertising and will feature
programming not available on its regular cable channels such as Blues
Clues, Franklin and Friends and Little Bear.
Variety writes that Noggin will be available via apps on the iPad,
iPhone and iPod. Nickelodeon did not reveal plans for Android devices,
the Associated Press writes.
Noggin will not require a cable or satellite TV subscription, enabling
parents to access programming for pre-schoolers without shelling out for
a more expensive pay TV package.
However, the $5.99 a month subscription fee could make some consumers
hesitate, considering there's an abundance of free children's
programming now available on such platforms as YouTube,, Netflix, Amazon
Prime, Hulu, and mobile apps.
Nickelodeon, which is owned by Viacom, will join CBS, HBO, Showtime and
ESPN and several other networks that have either made their programming
available outside the pay TV subscription or are expected to.
The programmers are hopeful to capture a growing audience that wants to
watch their favorite shows on all devices and at all times.
Many consumers also want the flexibility to only pay for the channels
they watch -- known as a la carte -- as a way to reduce their monthly TV
bills. And some believe they will be able to drop their pay TV service
if their favorite networks are available without needing a pay TV
subscription.
However, with Nickelodeon and CBS charging $5.99 a month for their
services, HBO's standalone service expected to go for $15 a month, and
ESPN now part of the $20 a month Sling TV service from Dish, viewers may
find that assembling a collection of favorite channels via streaming
could be as expensive as the dreaded pay TV bundle.
