He purchased a new mobile phone with Google’s Android operating system, put it in airplane mode, disabled the WiFi and stuck it in the glove compartment of his pickup truck. During the weekend trip, his phone tracked not just his route and destination, but reams of valuable data, such as barometric pressure that could determine what floor of a shopping mall he was on. When he connected to the internet three days later, the phone sent a catalog of its travels back to Google.
