A new unauthorized and unvarnished biography of Steve Jobs is set to be a big seller, thanks to a bit of backhanded promotion from Apple Computer. When a galley of the cleverly titled iCon was sent to Apple for a quick fact-check, the company demanded the title be killed. But publisher John Wiley & Sons refused, so last month Apple pulled all the publisher's books from the shelves of its retail stores. Though Apple's stores aren't a major outlet for Wiley, the story made headlines. Thanks to the publicity, Wiley doubled the print run and moved publication forward a month to May 16. Co-written by author Jeffrey Young and screenwriter William Simon, iCon is billed as an "amazing business comeback story." A follow-up to Young's unauthorized 1987 biography of Jobs, the book examines the Apple chief's founding of Pixar Animation Studios, his wrestling matches with Disney and the runaway success of iTunes and iPod.
