The honors continue piling up for film critic Roger Ebert, who got the
hometown royal treatment Monday after receiving a star on Hollywood's Walk
of Fame last month.
On the city-decreed Roger Ebert Day, a large crowd of friends, colleagues
and passersby clustered beneath the Chicago Theatre's historic marquee as
Mayor Richard Daley lauded Ebert, 63, for his loyalty to the city. Daley
unveiled a sidewalk plaque that honors the Sun-Times/syndicated television
critic with not one but four stars. The party then moved to the Chicago
Cultural Center, where director Harold Ramis (who made the Ebert favorite
"Groundhog Day") and ABC-Ch. 7 anchor Ron Magers interviewed Ebert on stage.
Not surprisingly, Ebert took over, offering very funny anecdotes about Lee
Marvin, Robert Mitchum and other notables encountered over his
38-years-and-counting career.
The program also included a video tribute to Ebert's late TV partner,
former Tribune movie critic Gene Siskel, whose widow Marlene Iglitzen spoke
warmly of Ebert at the plaque-dedication ceremony.
But the day's most celebrated partnership was between Ebert and his wife,
Chaz Ebert, who organized the event and received many hugs and public
declarations of love from her husband, because Roger Ebert Day also turned
out to be the Eberts' 13th wedding anniversary.
