Europe's Ariane-5 rocket will launch the world's heaviest
telecommunications satellite in August after a monthlong delay to fix a
technical problem in the ground equipment, Arianespace said Monday.
Thai operator Shinsat's IPSTAR satellite, which has a takeoff mass of 6.5
metric tons (7.15 short tons), will be launched into orbit on the night of
Aug. 10-11, said Arianespace, the European rocket's commercial arm.
Takeoff from the launch pad in Kourou, French Guiana, was originally
planned for July 7-8 but was postponed to work on part of the launcher.
The previous record for the heaviest satellite was Canadian
telecommunications satellite Anik-F2, at 5.9 tons (6.5 short tons). That
was launched by an Ariane-5 on July 18, 2004.
The August launch will be the 166th since Ariane rockets first went into
service in December 1979.
