Births, marriages and deaths go digital

Siemens Business Services has signed a deal to digitise a quarter of a
billion birth, marriage and death records for the Office for National
Statistics.
The three-year Digitisation of Vital Events (DoVE) project will involve
scanning, digitising and indexing more than 250 million records dating back
to 1837 to improve services for members of the public seeking records or
certificates.
The project will streamline and automate the labour intensive manual
process now used by the ONS, which responded to more than two million
applications for certificates last year.
The 80,000 microfilms used to archive the ONS's paper records will be
scanned and encrypted and the images transmitted securely to Siemens
business process operation centre in India for data capture. The contract
includes targets that must be met covering completeness, accuracy and quality.
ONS project director Carrie Armitage said, "It is essential to create new
solutions to save time and money and give better service to the public,
particularly as there is a growing number of applications for certificates."
Ian Tait, operation related services director at Siemens Business Services
said, "Being part of a project with such a huge scope and historical value
is very exciting."
