WASHINGTON, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- A U.S. poll shows hopes of capturing or
killing al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has dropped to 55 percent from 66
percent a year ago.
Just after the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the same USA
Today/CNN/Gallup poll report said 78 percent of those asked were optimistic
bin Laden would be brought to U.S. justice.
The national telephone poll, taken Friday through Sunday, showed 53 percent
of respondents said they believe bin Laden is planning a significant
terrorist attack against the United States and will succeed.
In other findings, 92 percent of those asked said al-Qaida would remain a
threat even if bin Laden were captured or killed and 35 percent said their
fire, police and emergency services are not well prepared for a terrorist
attack.
The number of people polled was not published, but the survey's margin of
error is 3-5 percentage points.
In a meeting with USA Today's editorial board Tuesday, Homeland Security
Secretary Michael Chertoff said although it "would be significant" if bin
Laden were captured or killed, "it's a mistake to personalize this. This is
not a one-man band or a one-man show."
