Who: Anchorage's TV stations are making the switch from analog to digital
signals.
What: For the next few years, they will beam both signals at the region's
TV sets before converting to digital signals only.
Why: The digital technology enables significantly better pictures and
sound. The federal government has ordered the change.
How to see digital local channels:
For over-the-air reception, you'll need a newer TV that can capture the
signal or a converter box on your older TV. To watch high-definition
programming, you'll need a TV that can handle the higher resolution and
sound quality.
For cable TV subscribers, you will be able to get the digital signal if you
have digital-cable service. High-definition programming needs a different
cable box that costs $5 a month more.
For satellite TV subscribers, the FCC has ordered the local channels'
digital signals be provided by June 2007. Dish Network and DirecTV haven't
disclosed their plans.
Stations shifting to digital signals:
KTUU Channel 2 (NBC)
KTBY Channel 4 (Fox)
KYES Channel 5 (UPN)
KAKM Channel 7 (PBS)
KTVA Channel 11 (CBS)
KIMO Channel 13 (ABC)
