Third Rigas Gets Probation, House Arrest
Michael Rigas, the former chief operating officer of bankrupt cable
operator Adelphia, was sentenced Friday to two years probation with 10
months of home confinement for his alleged role in the company's
financial woes.
Last November, Michael Rigas, the son of Adelphia founder John Rigas,
pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of signing a false statement. In
2004, a federal jury deadlocked in his trial on most of the counts
involving Adelphia's collapse.
Wire services reported that U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff handed down
the sentence after saying Michael Rigas appeared to be a good person
"who found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time."
In June 2005, John Rigas was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for
concealing loans at the company, essentially making Adelphia a personal
piggy bank. His other son, Timothy Rigas, was sentenced to 20 years in
prison for his role.
