Report: A Nagrastar, DISH Split?
Is EchoStar looking for new signal security help?
Dow Jones reported Thursday that Kudelski's top North American
conditional access client may be looking for another supplier of secure
pay-TV products and services. Kudelski and EchoStar each have a 50
percent stake in NagraStar, a joint venture that provides security
access devices to EchoStar.
Neither company would comment on the report. Earlier this week, EchoStar
disclosed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing that the
security of an existing set of cards has been compromised, and added
that it has implemented software patches and other security measures to
help secure the service.
In 2005, EchoStar purchased about $121.4 million in security access
devices from NagraStar, down slightly from $123.8 million in 2004 and up
from $68.4 million in 2003, the satellite TV company stated in the SEC
filing. As of Dec. 31, EchoStar was committed to purchase about $35.5
million in security access devices from NagraStar.
