U.S. Population to Hit 300 Million The United States Census Bureau was expected to report a total population of 300 million by mid-October 2006. Due to the rapid rate of population growth, the Bureau expects the number of residents to increase to 400 million sometime around 2040, USA Today reported Wednesday. The growth can be attributed to the country's high birth rate, economic stability, and immigration, the report said. Immigration, both legal and illegal, represents the largest cause of the soaring population. The Pew Hispanic Center estimates that 53 percent of the 100 million Americans added to the population since 1967 are either immigrants or their children. The United States, currently the third-largest country by population behind China and India, is the only industrialized nation to experience the rapid population spike. Most European populations are expected to decrease in coming years, and the populations of Russia and Japan are expected to slide by 25 percent before 2050.
