Vonage Hit With Patent Suit Filed by Klausner
JUL 10, 2006 01:05:09 PM

Vonage Holdings on Monday was hit with a patent infringement lawsuit filed
by Klausner Technologies, and the patent holding firm is seeking damages and
royalties to the tune of $180 million, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The patent at issue relates to voice-mail services offered by Vonage,
according to the Journal.

Vonage has also been sued by two Verizon Communications divisions for its
alleged use of Verizon-developed technology and its infringement on seven
Verizon patents related to voice over IP (VoIP), the Journal reports.

Klausner settled another legal dispute with AOL over the very same patent
earlier this year for an undisclosed sum, and as part of the settlement, AOL
was given a license to employ the patent at issue, according to the Journal.

On a separate note, Vonage also said on Monday that it purchased three
patents having to do with the "compression of packetized digital signals
commonly used in VoIP technology" from Digital Pack Licensing, but the
company did not disclose financial details of the deal, the Journal reports.

Michael Tribolet, Vonage America's president, said, "We're committed to
developing, acquiring and protecting the root technologies that are at the
heart of our business. Vonage's strategic plan also includes a concerted
effort to grow, create and acquire other significant intellectual property
portfolios," according to the Journal.
