DENVER -- As cable companies offer both cable and telephone services in less
expensive packages than some competitors, the quality of customer service
becomes an important issue.

According to a report released by J.D. Power and Associates, customers have
not only been receiving lower bills with certain cable companies for
combined services, but those companies have also ranked highest on customer
satisfaction for local and long distance telephone service.

The study measured customer satisfaction with both local and long distance
telephone service. It found that cable companies ranked the highest in
customer satisfaction in five of six U.S. regions.

"While telephone service offered by cable companies is relatively new to the
market, large numbers of customers are being lured to switch with enticing
cost savings and highly attractive bundles of video, voice and data
service," said Steve Kirkeby, executive director of telecommunications and
technology research at J.D. Power and Associates.

Because cable lines can carry more than television channels into a home,
phone services with a cable company can often be less expensive. J.D. Power
and Associates said cable telephone service averages out at $42.40 a month,
while the service from an established phone company averages $53.59.

In the west, southwest and northeast region of the country the report ranked
Cox Communications, a cable company, as the highest in customer
satisfaction, although Cox cable has a small position in Colorado and very
limited phone service.

According to the report, Verizon is the only long distance carrier that
ranks above average. Qwest is about average followed closely by AT&T, and
then Comcast.
