In typical fashion, Microsoft has issued notice that they are planning
to do something sometime in the future—in this case make the final
version of IE7 available to customers as a high-priority Windows Update
shortly after the finalized browser becomes available sometime in Q4 of
this year. This quasi-announcement was posted to the IE7 developer's
blog on Wednesday, ostensibly as a means of ensuring better security
among Windows users relying on Microsoft's IE6 or beta versions of IE7;
it's also likely a means of testing the somewhat tepid waters
surrounding the new browser.

According to the posting, users accepting the update will have the
choice of not installing the update or uninstalling the update later
(though uninstalling might require some finagling).

One point to keep in mind about IE7 is that this browser is not an
update of IE6; it is built on an entirely new code base. Still,
Microsoft has programmed the install in such a way that you will not be
able to have the two browsers on the same Windows machine at the same
time. It is possible now to uninstall beta versions of IE7 and return to
IE6; and we've been told by Microsoft representatives that this will be
true of the finalized IE7.

Unlike most Automatic Updates, where users only get information about
the update if they've configured their settings to allow them the choice
of reviewing the update, XP users will be presented with a welcome
screen providing the choices to "Install, "Don't Install," or "Ask Me
Later."

If you happen to work in a larger organization and are wondering how
this might affect you, worry not, your IT department will be able to
block the update and have it initiate on their own schedule using a free
Internet Explorer 7 Blocker Toolkit meant for enterprise customers.
Admins in need of additional information should visit the Windows
Update/Microsoft Update site on TechNet.
