Sirius resumes radio shipments after FCC nod by David Jones http://www.newyorkbusiness.com/news.cms?id=14444
Sirius Satellite Radio Inc., the nation's second largest digital radio provider, said Thursday that it resumed shipping three of its radios after the Federal Communications Commission confirmed the devices complied with federal regulations. In a regulatory filing last month, Sirius said it had been notified by the FCC earlier this year that FM transmitters in its radios did not meet federal emissions standards and frequency rules. The National Association of Broadcasters in June sent a letter to the FCC complaining that signals from satellite radio and MP3 players crossed with FM radio stations that were being listened to by nearby drivers. The association told the FCC that some of the transmissions contained foul language and sexually explicit content, which is prohibited on publicly available radio stations. Sirius acknowledged that some of its radios have "transmission noise," but said the radios do not violate any health or safety standards, according to a regulatory report filed on Wednesday. All three radio brands approved by the FCC -- the Xact Visor, Sirius One and Sportster Replay -- are made and shipped by Korean-based distributor Kiryung Electronics Co. Production was never halted on the Sirius Sportster 4, which Kiryung also makes. Manhattan-based Sirius offers 125 channels of commercial free radio to nearly 4.8 million subscribers. Rival XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc., which faced similar FCC compliance issues, offers 170 channels to 7 million subscribers. FCC, XM nor Sirius officials were immediately available for comment. ©2006 Crain Communications Inc.
