TJX breach shows that encryption can be foiled

By Ross Kerber, Globe Staff | March 31, 2007
The Boston Globe

Encryption alone is no panacea for threats to consumer data,
according to specialists who say the technology's limit can be seen
in the problems reported by TJX Cos. of Framingham.

The notion of using complex math formulas to scramble electronic
information is gaining steam as a way to protect individuals'
privacy, an area of growing concern for retailers and banks as data
thefts become more brazen.

But recent details to emerge on how hackers accessed the parent of
stores including T.J. Maxx and Marshalls show how encryption can be
defeated by clever thieves -- and suggest the breach may have been an
inside job.

A securities filing by TJX on Wednesday disclosed that the incident
may have compromised more than 45 million credit and debit card
numbers, the most in any single incident. In the filing, TJX also
stated that "we believe that the intruder had access to the
decryption tool for the encryption software utilized by TJX."

TJX spokeswoman Sherry Lang declined to elaborate on the document,
but outside security consultants say the language hints that a
company employee or contractor, or someone known by an employee or
contractor, was able to gain access to TJX's computers and obtain the
formula needed to unscramble data.

Google "Aibrushing History" with Pre-Katrina Images, Subcommittee Says

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- A congressional subcommittee wants to know why Google
is using outdated satellite imagery of New Orleans on its site.

The pictures show the city before Hurricane Katrina struck and replace post
hurricane pictures that were there. The House committee chairman said the
use of old imagery does an
"injustice" to Katrina's victims by "airbrushing history."

Google's director for maps and satellite imagery said a combination of
factors, including resolution and clarity, goes into deciding what imagery
to use.

He said efforts to post more current imagery are under way.

The House committee has given Google until April 6 to disclose who made the
decision to replace the imagery and to reveal whether the company was
contacted by any government entity about changing the pictures.

Suspected Movie "Pirates" Arrested

A Stockton, California couple arrested for illegally distributing
copyrighted movies, DVDs and music CDs from locations in Stockton entered
guilty pleas to criminal copyright infringement charges Friday.

Jesus Huerta, 49, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit criminal copyright
infringement and criminal copyright infringement. Rosa Isela Huerta, 40,
pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit criminal copyright infringement.

An investigation by the Sacramento Valley High Tech Crimes Task Force
determined the Huertas distributed counterfeit movies and music between
September 2005 to about October 5, 2005 from a Stockton storefront. Law
enforcement recovered more than 50,000 counterfeit DVDs and CDs from the
location.

The movie DVDs seized were films still playing in theaters and not yet
legally released on DVD. The titles included "The Wedding Crashers, "The
40-Year-Old Virgin" and "Hustle and Flow." The DVDs were being sold for $2
each.

The Huertas also admitted to running a similar operation from a store in
San Jose. Three Bay Area residents also pleaded guilty to criminal
copyright infringement and conspiracy charges.

Sentencing for the Huertas is scheduled for June 15. They face a maximum
sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
