Actually, one of the developers here figured it out.  Changing the 
display_errors value in the php.ini to "Off" suppressed these errors.

Yes, you could set your error reporting to a lower level.
For example, in LocalSettings.php:

error_reporting( E_ALL ^ E_STRICT );
