Angus, So you confirm that just installing the default alsa-firmware package from alsa-project.org make your sound card working. Great.
The problem seems currently that all firmwares for Linux kernel are moving into a new way of restricted parts of the kernel, so in near future, alsa-firmware should be depreciated. I hope too that it will be soon in Ubuntu.
