rusivi confirmed that the question is solved:
As noted in the following bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/418984
the current workaround/fix to this issue is to use the Firefox Add-on
MediaPlayerConnectivity, install the mentioned packages, then assign VLC
as the application that opens Windows Media Player streams/files (ex.
mms).
