We are implementing Client Server PHA in our health region and are unable to determine how to successfully manage Narcotic distribution and control in CS PHA.
Our current Pharmacy system has excellent capability for this process.

WHAT WE NEED THE CS PHA SYSTEM TO DO:

*We run a perpetual Narcotic inventory.

*All issues/returns are uniquely numbered by the computer for tracking purposes.

*Two checking signatures are required on all items BEFORE they are delivered to the nursing units.

*Nursing units have a standard legal sized sheet that allows them to sign in all narcotics on one page and show administration quantities on a per patient basis. They do a running count and require full narcotic cupboard counts with every change of shift.

*An assistant hand delivers the narcotics to the nursing units where a label goes on the back of the nursing sheet and both the assistant and nursing staff sign in each issued narcotic.

*Full narcotic vault counts are done on a weekly basis and any discrepancies are dealt with.

I am wondering if your Health region runs a totally Manual or Computer based system or both? If it is manual, do you utilize the computer based inventory at all for narcotics? Do you attach any type of label to your narcotics before they are delivered to the floors? Do you have 1 person, or a multitude of persons that handle your narcotic inventories - with regards to issuing, delivery and counting?

I would appreciate any information you could provide to me. I have additional documentation if required. Hope you can help!

Thanks,
Pat
