An interface engine's primary role is brokering and customizing messages sent between Meditech and other vendors. They allow the user to minimize the interface customization on all vendor systems. This allows running of interfaces in a more "vanilla" and better-tested mode. Meditech does not really know if it is sending to an interface engine or an OV system. It sends to an IP and port in either case. Some customization may be required on the Meditech side, like sending an additional field. Sometimes this is available without charge. An interface engine also provides increased interface visibility, logging and problem notification. It also provides a common point of interface control.
