If you have NUR, you can provide users with a status board set to location as
the point from which to place orders. A button on the integrated desktop can
connect to Order Entry for the highlighted patient.

Setting the status board to location reduces the need to lookup a patient from
a long list by name and select the wrong one, or mistyping the account number,
, plus the STB flags patients with same last name with yellow. They still must
ensure the correct patient is highlighted before selecting the order entry
button, but it narrows the chances for wrong patient selection.

Good luck,

I hear that public floggings work well...

:\

Aside from that, you can reduce the errors by setting the MIS Users to
be restricted by location. (Pt access Restricted by location? = Y).
People will only be able to enter orders for patients registered to the
unit (location) there device is defined to be on. There is, however, a
lot of setup and upkeep to this option.

Is it Friday yet...

Hope it helps...

Brian

Subject: [MEDITECH-L] Wrong Patient Selected for Orders

We have a recurring problem with staff (physicians, nurses,
ward clerks, etc.) placing orders on the wrong inpatients.
Sometimes this is due to patients having the same or similar names.
Although staff are encouraged to identify patients by account
number they tend to identify patients by name. This is not
a frequently occurring problem but one wrong order is too many.
Has your facility experienced this type of problem and have you
implemented any creative solutions?
