Hi, Nicole
Yes, it's easy to print to a file in Magic 5.4. If you're using the
MEDITECH Remote Workstation on your Windows PC (I'm using version
4.18c), then you can print to a plain text file on disk. When you want
to print to a file, just type the word, "LOCAL" at the Print on Device?
prompt.
To set up your LOCAL printer, open the MEDITECH Remote Workstation and
select the "Printer Setup" menu:
1) Click on the icon on the top left of the window
2) Select the "Workstation Menus" option
3) Select "Options"
4) Select "Printer Setup"
A dialog will pop up titled "Workstation Pass Through Printing" and
identifying the default printer as "NPRCAP"
There is a drop-down list of printer drivers. You can experiment with
the various drivers to see what will work best with your printer. The
EPFX is a basic EPSON text print driver and is a good place to start.
The EPFXGR is a EPSON text print driver with support for bold, italics,
underscore text attributes. If you have an HP printer that supports
PCL5, then try the various HPLASERxxxx drivers. You just need to
experiment with this setting. I use the "EPFX" driver.
First, however, you need to create a printer in your Windows
configuration and this printer is named "NPRCAP". To do so, go to the
Windows Control Panel | Printers and Faxes control panel applet. You
should see a Printer Task to Add a printer. Select this Task to open
the Add Printer Wizard. When the Welcome screen appears, click Next.
On the next screen of the Wizard, choose the Local Printer option and
click Next. On the next screen, select the printer Port that this
virtual printer will be attached to. This could be LPT1: (probably
best) or some other port. When you click Next, the following Wizard
screen will let you choose a printer manufacturer and printer model.
The manufacturer should be "Generic" and the printer model should be
"Generic / Text Only". The click Next to get to the Printer Driver
screen. The Generic/Text Only driver should be installed by default on
your Windows PC, so just choose the "Keep existing driver" option and
click Next once again. On the following screen, you can assign a name
to this virtual printer. The name should be "NPRCAP". You can set this
to be the default printer if you wish, but that is usually inconvenient
for everything else, so I prefer for the NPRCAP virtual printer to not
be the default printer. Finally, click Next again to set the Sharing
options (Do not share) and again to print a test page (try it!). Next
once more and you're finished with this step.
Note that you can also use the MEDITECH Document Manager (PPII) as your
printer driver in Windows if you have installed VMagicPPII.exe as a
Windows Service, but that isn't necessary if you follow the steps above.
Now when you want to print to a file from within MAGIC, simply type
"LOCAL" in the "Print On:" dialog popup. Another dialog will pop up:
"Print to File". Enter the Output File Name as a complete path and file
name, as in:
C:\Temp\aTextFile.txt
Note that although windows will let you enter a path or file name with
embedded spaces by just enclosing the complete path in double quotes,
that won't work here. You can not enter a path with embedded spaces,
such as:
"C:\Temp\A Text File.txt"
although you aren't limited to just 8.3 DOS filename formats.
I hope this helps,
Alex

Hi All,
Anyone ever printed to a file from Meditech? I'm looking to create a
printer that dumps the output to a file (preferably a readable file...
:)). Anyone have any experience with this in Magic 5.4 SR2?
Thanks,
Nicole
