Hi,

We recently just completed moving terminals into every patient room and
this was a big concern.

So, we took a very systematic approach to the problem. We first checked
with IC to determine what requirements they had. Once we had this
information we began searching for vendors that had products that could
meet these requirements. We came up with 3 different potential
solutions.

One was simply to purchase a keyboard condom. Very inexpensive but
required frequent replacement. Cost: About $20.

The second was a rubber, roll-up keyboard. They were completely sealed
and even came backlit for those night time documentation needs. However,
the "feel" of the keyboard did require getting some used to. Cost: About
$45.

The final option was an industrial grade, hermetically sealed keyboard.
This device could be thoroughly cleansed if needed without harm to the
keyboard. However, it was only about the size of a laptop keyboard.
Cost: About $350.

Information Technology did not want to be the decision maker for this
item. So, we had Nursing's lead analyst host a "get acquainted" session
for the entire clinical staff. It ran for about 3 months. It was
advertised at meetings, via email and even printed in newsletters.

Finally when nobody showed up the Nurse analyst decided on the rubber
keyboard.

Now everybody hates us.

I hope you have better luck!

Thanks,

We are preparing to implement NUR next spring and were wondering how
facilities are handling infection control procedures for COWS, computers
mounted in patient rooms and hospital laptops that patients may use in
their rooms?

Also, I am unable to access the meditech-L archives at this address:
http://prosonic.iserver.net/pipermail/meditech-l/

Am I using the wrong one?

Thanks---Sandy
