Somewhat of a tough call. We use Picis.
If the OR can say that the Surgeon will "definitely" continue using a new Item,
it should
be on the preference card.... but only if it is specifically set up in an MM
STOCK
Inventory.
Whether this is a one time use or three or six is sort of irrelevant if the
surgeon
hasn't decided it will be used in the future.
If it's Chargeable, and exception noting is the only way the charge can be
added to the
patient's account, it should probably be set up specifically in the ITEM
Dictionary.
But one time use Chargeable ITEMS can always be added to the account by other
means.
Keep it in perspective! Is it "Reimbursable"? Chances are, not under DRG. Is
it high
cost and has to be fed to a Costing system? Maybe, but what is the value to
the
decision makers?
You'll NEVER be 100 percent. You can't impeed the surgeon's trials/ use of new
technology.
MISC ITEMS in MM with $$ ranges are a viable option in many cases.
ie MISC ORTHO ITEM $100-$200 etc. If a payer sees this on a claim and
questions it, be
sure that MM/HIS has the specific info.

Hi All,

For those of you who use Preference Cards with Meditech's OR system or
Picis OR Manager/MedSurg I was wondering what procedures or process
sites have for getting the cost and adding them to the case record of
items/implants not in MM? Also, who is in charge of reviewing and
checking the supplies used on a case?

We are having some issues that we thought we solved or would get better
with time. We have an OR person who reviews the exception noting of
supplies and enters items that the nurses could not find, using
miscellaneous codes we have set up. The list of items not in MM or in
our OR system just seems to be getting longer and MM will not enter them
unless we use and stock the item more than three times.

Also, do you use your list of supplies used (Patient chargeable or not)
on a case as part of your legal documentation?

We use Picis Preference cards, but would think that all sites using
cards would come across these same issues.

Thanks in Advance
