Hi, Patti,

I don't disagree with the "leaving building=new account" when the patient has
been inpatient. But we don't discharge all our outpatient account types, so
we'd forever be liable for the patients. Our HIM Director says one account is
fine for multiple visits on the same day because there is documentation to
differentiate between the visits.

And Dawn - the billing office can't see that it's two requisitions and
collection times because that information normally doesn't flow into billing.

My two cents; From a Medical Records person.....

Two accounts -- Two separate encounters -- Two separate records.. (with
some exceptions, ie: RCR accounts, enter visit dates & times)

My guidance to registration staff, if the patient leaves the building = new
account needs to be created;
It becomes a legal issue, if your records indicate that a patient is on your
premises/is a patient, but is not.... the facility is liable for the patient
from "admit date & time to discharge date & time".

It is a billing requirement that the bills be combined....
Administrative & Medical Records requirement that two accounts be
created....
