Apparently, there is a new function in Blood bank for bar coding blood in Meditech magic version 5.5/5.6.  We are beginning to prepare to move from 5.4 to 5.6 and are seeking more information on this enhancement as it is unclear to us from the below statement how this works.  I have attached what I found on the Meditech Web site.  Thanks you ahead of time for any information that is provided.

Part of the 5.5/5.6 Meditech upgrade includes:

Positive patient identification to integrate blood transfusion:

With this enhancement, a new functionality is added to the

Blood Bank and Nursing Modules to allow health care

organizations to use barcodes to verify blood product and

patient identification, patient and donor blood type

compatibility, and blood product expiration dates.

In addition, new Electronic Blood Product Administration

Routines are added to the Nursing Module to allow health

care organizations to electronically document, monitor, and

display the blood product status and the patient condition

before, during, and after a blood transfusion in accordance

with JCAHO, FDA, American Red Cross, and AABB regulations.

The blood product and patient transfusion information are

recorded in the Nursing and Laboratory Modules, and you can

view this information in the Laboratory, Patient Care

Inquiry, and Enterprise Medical Record Modules.

Thank you,
