======================================

Hi Everyone,
    In case you missed the MUSE Conference last week, I thought I'd send you some news and observations.

News
    I'm sure everyone learned all kinds of things at the many many education sessions.  However several news items stuck in my mind.  First is that David Zelward was elected to be the next MUSE President.  David has been involved with MUSE for many years and I've always found him to be thoughtful, respectful and a good listener.   Congratulations Dave.   He will take office after next year's conference in San Diego.   Another board change is that Vicki Cooke will replace Martha Sullivan.   We're very sorry to see Martha go as we've only had the best of dealings with Martha during her term.  Unlike some other board members who left and haven't participated in MUSE very much, I expect to continue to see Martha at MUSE events in the future.  On the other hand, congratulations to Vicki.  Vicki has worked hard running the MUSE Southeast regionals for many years.   MUSE Board meetings won't be the same with Vicki's enthusiasm.

    Another topic concerns the future release of Client/Server version 6.0.   I heard from several sources that this will NOT be another standard upgrade for client/server users.   I would love to tell you that Meditech was there to explain what's coming in 6.0 but as most of you know Meditech has not attended the US and Canadian MUSE conferences for several years.  Meditech does, however, attend the MUSE UK conference and last year talked about releases up to 5.7 and in one session said that the screens in MAGIC 5.7 would be as close as possible to the C/S 5.7 screens.   I heard more details in the rumors about 6.0 but rather than repeat them here, I suggest that C/S users contact Meditech directly and ask about it.   If you want to hear more rumor details, write to me.

Conference
    The conference was well organized as usual.   The decision by the MUSE board to create permanent positions several years ago was a good one.   Prior to Alan being hired, the board ran the show and the board changed from year to year.    Alan and his staff's experience grows with each show and it is apparent.   The conference facility was large enough to handle the volume and the breakout rooms were close together unlike last year in Las Vegas.   The only complaint was that the hotel was spread out way too much so that some rooms were a loooonnng walk in 90 degree heat from the conference area.   The show will be returning to Disneyworld in 2012 and probably will be at the same property.  The vendor area was the biggest ever and the size and quality of booth exhibits was better than ever.   The schedule was packed with sessions with something for everyone.   My concern is that the show has been shortened from 3.5 days in years past to 2.75 days this year.   I'd like to see Saturday put back into the conference so that people don't have to rush out in the middle of the afternoon on Friday to make flights home.   Believe it or not, we've started making plans for next year in San Diego.  I assume you have also.

    Dan Rather was the keynote speaker this year.   He gave an emotional speech about the news and about the CBS staff that recently had been killed or injured in Iraq.  He also told a funny story about his first job working at a radio station and later offered someone in the audience a job because they asked a good question about his story.  What I will remember most is that Mr.. Rather spent allot of time afterwards talking to everyone who wanted to talk to him or get an autograph.   He was in no hurry to rush out.  He is a kind, polite, considerate person that we somehow don't expect celebrities to be.   I asked him why we don't see the aggressive investigative journalism that we saw in the 1970s and he responded that journalists are afraid of being labeled unpatriotic.  Scary.

Why attend MUSE
    You've all heard the standard reasons to attend the MUSE conference including workshops, educations sessions, vendors and networking.  They're all true but I want to suggest one more.  Every year I'm sad when the show ends.  I told Alan I was happy to stay until they dragged me out.  He offered to arrange that.  It goes by too fast and I'm unhappy to have to wait another whole year for the next show.   I realized that the show is very exciting to attend.   Most of us attending the show are passionate about what we do.   We care about our work.   Its even more uplifting to be surrounded by others who feel the same way.   Its inspiring to hear what other people are doing and to be able to share your issues and ideas with them.   Its a key event to prevent your work from being the "same old thing."   A business associate told me this morning that every year when I come back from the MUSE conference that I have a much more excited and upbeat demeanor (if you can imagine that).  I hope you agree.   In the interim, I hope we'll see many of you at the regional shows this fall and that you are planning to attend the International show next year in San Diego.   Does anyone have the link for the registration yet?
