Brenda, Would only patients in isolation have the barcode available at the door? Any possibility that the barcode could be left over from a previous patient? By giving them permission to scan the armband barcode at the door for isolation patients may lead to them finding ways to scan the armband barcode for other patients without it being on the patient. Nurses are inventive enough at finding ways to work around the system when they can without us giving them more ideas. We have 2 dedicated isolation rooms that we mounted a Thin client along with a scanner. If there is an isolation patient in one of the other rooms, they use the mobile carts. If not needed, they will leave it in there and they will be cleaned upon the patient's discharge. Otherwise we treat it the same way that Lab treats the EKG machine that they have to take into an isolation room. They would wipe it all down when leaving the room with antiseptic wipes. We did go with washable keyboards for this reason. If we had it to do over, we would use the regular keyboards and just replace after use in isolation rooms as needed. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Brenda Wiley Sent: Wednesday, July 12, 2006 2:51 PM To: Jo Boyce; [email protected]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MEDITECH-L] How do you handle Isolation issues with COWs All messages should be posted in plain text. Right now what we're thinking about is having the barcode holding the patient identification on the outside of the door where the patient's name is. All scanning of meds would occur outside the room, including scanning the barcode w/ the patient identifier. Then the nurse will do the 'manual' check we are currently doing now w/ paper MAR's asking the patient to state their name and DOB before s/he gives the patient the medications. I'd sure be open to other ideas.
