Gil:

We have been using SAN drives for our Meditech DR for a number of
years now. It was formerly on an XIOtech SAN. A couple months ago,
we moved it to a much bigger EMC SAN.

I wasn't involved in any big way on the hardware side of the installation.
So I can't offer much in the way of insight on that process. It was
pretty elaborate and we had a very good consulting firm handle the
more difficult hardware details. EMC was very much in the loop and onsite
for a good amount of time. I should mention, we were also shifting a
lot of our NT servers to VMWare virtual servers on the same SAN at the
same time.

At the point I came in, what needed to be done was installing the OS
(Windows 2003) and installing SQL Server 2000. I then wrote all the
scripts for detaching the databases from the old server and moving and
reattaching them to the new server. Our SQL Server 2000 servers are not
virtual servers. There were backup issues and lack support for 4 CPUs
with VMWare. From my perspective, the fact that the servers are on a
SAN is completely transparent. My servers look and act like any other
server.

By the way, the VMWare servers are very stable as well. We are a Magic
installation.
