We have direct family relationships defined as such; Father, Mother, Grandmother, Uncle, Sister-in-law, etc. We also have defined other 'statuses' such as "Ward of the Court", "Emancipated Minor", "Foster Child", etc. And then for other types of relationships we use "Life Partner" or "Significant Other".
