Hi

We have been using the wireless Symbol technology for the past 2
years and it runs slightly faster than the DGs but not significantly.
We are using the Iatrics program to run this. However, we have run into
a problem in the last few months as traffic on our network has increased
and the Symbols have started to abort their transfer of data mid
transfer leaving the end users high and dry. Despite working with
Symbol we have had little satisfaction from them because their speed of
transfer is slow. The load times that we are seeing on some of our busy
units is in excess of 4-6 minutes and even in the smaller units or in
less trafficed time it is 3 minutes. So although the Symbols are rugged
and probably ugly enough not to be stolen, their performance has not
equalled their promise. Also their cost and we have several in our
inventory was expensive. Obviously, if the clinical staff will not use
the devices because of the above slow times and aborted transfer, then
they are almost useless to us.

We have been trialling the very simple Palm PDAs which are of
course much less expensive, have a clearer screen to read (which has
also been a Symbol problem) and have transfer times less than 1 minute.
They are lighter and therefore do not pull on either backs or pockets
and have tested out well. We are rolling these out to units that had
the highest transfer times and problems and are continuing to work with
Symbol (who were not initially very responsive) to look at any options
to upgrade . Please feel free to contact myself at any time - I can
also set you up with our hardware guys who have spent days and days
trying to resolve the problems

Hi Julie!

If you would not mind, please either email me any responses that you get
or post them to the list. We are implementing Nursing POC this Fall,
replacing some DG handhelds as well.

My concerns regarding PDA device selection include cost, reliability,
durability, and security.

The Dell Axim and HP PocketPC PDAs are small and inexpensive ($300-350),
but I am not confident that they are manufactured and designed to
withstand use in such an environment. They are certainly not very
rugged, and likely will not survive a single drop.

Symbol PDAs are more rugged and are designed for greater durability, but
their higher cost reflects that ($1000-1500).

I'd like to hear from any hospitals who are already LIVE with Nursing
POC and get their feedback on the PDAs that they are using for this
application. Thanks again!

Dear fellow L-Listers....
We are beginning the search for a replacement for our DG Handhelds and
wonder what devices are being used out there. Pros and cons welcome.
Cost and durability are issues. We would like to explore wired and
wireless options. Thanks.
