Michael / Leigh, if you're looking for eMAR and BMV answers, you may want to attend one of the Site Visit associated with the MUSE regional conferences. We will have details soon about a Site Visit on this topic kindly hosted by Howard County Hospital (Columbia, Maryland) as part of the Eastern US regional conference in September.

For those closer to the other coast, you can register now for the Site Visit at John Muir Medical Center (Concord, California) to learn about their BMV implementation. This Site Visit (August 29) is offered as part of the Western US regional conference in San Francisco - see below for other eMAR/BMV presentations offered at this conference!

Site Visit
In 1999, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) published "To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System". The IOM estimated that 44,000-98,000 deaths occur annually as a result of medical error. These findings prompted the John Muir Health System to initiate a number of patient safety initiatives, including implementation of bar code technology in the medication use process. During the site visit, presenters will share their BMV/On-Line MAR implementation experiences from pre-implementation through full implementation in all of the inpatient care areas, and review where they are today.

Topics include:
• Core Team Configuration
• Hardware Selection
• Build Decisions in Pharmacy & Nursing
• Workflow Considerations
• Medical Staff Implications
• Staff Training
• Pre-Live issues & resolutions
• Planning & support for pilot unit go live
• Housewide rollout
• Ongoing support & issues
John Muir Medical Center, Concord Campus is a 259-bed acute care facility that serves Contra Costa and southern Solano counties. The medical center has long been recognized as a pre-eminent center for cancer care and cardiac care, including open heart surgery and interventional cardiology. Other areas of specialty include general surgery, orthopedic, and neurology programs. John Muir Medical Center, Concord Campus is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), a national surveyor of quality patient care.

Setting the Pharmacy Standard for a Successful BMV/eMAR Implementation
Patient safety goals are consistently being brought to the forefront of healthcare. The implementation of barcode technology has enabled many hospitals to achieve JCAHO standards of such goals. This presentation will examine implementation of BMV/eMAR in a Client/Server 5.5.2 environment with an emphasis in pharmacy preparation.  We will cover three stages of BMV/eMAR implementation:
• Pre-Planning
• Go Live
• Post Implementation Support
Pitfalls to avoid, lessons learned, and successful process changes will be some of the invaluable recommendations made by this presentation. Methodist Health System is one of Dallas’ largest and oldest non-profit health systems.  Currently operating two hospitals with plans to open a third in December, 2006, Methodist has been live on Meditech since June, 2004.

The Right Stripes: Insuring a Successful Implementation of BMV/eMAR in a C/S Environment
This presentation will discuss nursing training and implementation support for the BMV/eMAR project at Methodist Health System in Dallas, Texas.
Topics will include:
• scheduling just-in-time training for over 1000 users
• standardized training content
• use of scripting and order sets for practice patients
• twelve week implementation schedule that included 20 nursing units at two hospitals
• to do list for the day before go-live, including user access, order acknowledgement
• BMV support team - 24 hour coverage for each unit’s go-live
• issues and workarounds after go-live
Methodist Health System is one of Dallas’ largest and oldest non-profit health systems, and currently operates two hospitals, with plans to open a third in December, 2006.  Methodist is currently on C/S Version 5.5.2 and has been live on Meditech since June, 2004.

BMV - The Ultimate Dosing Machine
Bar code point-of-care technology can significantly reduce medication errors.  Stillwater Medical Center chose to implement a bar code medication administration system other than Meditech.  This bedside medication safety system optimizes the nurse's role in patient care and links to the hospital's existing Meditech information system.  The other vendor's system is a wireless nurse workflow tool that provides bar code patient safety, bedside documentation, and clinical and workflow alerts.  This presentation describes Stillwater's selection of the other vendor's system, the installation process and interfaces between the other vendor's system and Meditech.  An overview of Stillwater's specific project considerations and implementation activities is provided, including the development of ADT, financial and clinical interfaces to Stillwater's Meditech system, along with detailed pre- and post-installation results.

BMV Implementation: Lessons Learned
Many hospitals are planning to implement a BMV system in the near future.
Frequently, much of the attention is focused on selecting the hardware and software system and not on how to successfully integrate the BMV system into your hospital environment.  This presentation will focus on lessons learned from successful BMV implementations including:
o pharmacy preparation
o nursing workflow
o system compliance monitoring

======================================

We are getting ready to begin our eMAR with BMV project. We are looking for insight from facilities that have already implemented eMAR & BMV.

1. What BMV software application did you choose? Would you recommend it and why.

2. How long did it take to implement?  If you had front line staff on your implementation team, how long were they out of the regular schedule rotation?

3. What would you do differently?

If you could make time for brief phone call so we could pick your brain please let me know.
Thanks so much
Leigh
