======================================

I have copied a portion of the EMTALA guidelines below.  We currently have an ER log written out of ADM.PAT.  Due to certain file maintenance days in ADM, this log is not accurate if run for days more than 60 days back.  In order to meet this reg now…we either have to…

  • Run this report monthly from Meditech and save it to a network server for later use
  • Run this report as requested (inaccurately) and run a couple of other ABS Compile reports also.  These reports are IP Admits from ER and OBS Admits from ER.  We can combine these 3 reports and come up with a complete ER log.

I need to build a report out of a different application, but at the same time, pull all the necessary information.  The information is listed below.  We might could use a report that does not have some of the following information…

  • Patient name
  • Patient account number
  • ER physician name
  • ER registration date and time
  • ER departure date and time
  • Length of stay in ER
  • Age
  • Sex
  • Reason for ER visit
  • Arrival method to ER
  • Admitting physician (to hospital if patient is admitted)
  • Room (where admitted to…)
  • ER discharge disposition
  • Patient Registration Rep.

Does anyone have such a report that they would be willing to share?

I would appreciate any assistance that I can get.

Thanks so much!

CMS “EMTALA Interpretive Guidelines” –State Operations Manual Appendix V, page 2 under ‘General information’ list the following as 2 of the bulleted requirements of hospitals with dedicated emergency departments:

▪     Maintain medical and other records related to individuals transferred to and from the hospital for a period of five years from the date of the transfer

▪     Maintain a central log of individual’s who came to the dedicated ED seeking treatment and indicate whether these individuals: refused treatment, were denied treatment, were treated, admitted, stabilized, and/or transferred, or were discharged.

It further states that a surveyor will ask the CEO for ‘dedicated ED logs for the past 6-12 months’. (pg. 6), under Part II.
