I got an interesting e-mail from Mark Donovan, Meditech's pharmacy supervisor. I'm sure all of the other Medispan customers will get it as well. In his letter, he admits that Meditech only uses the first 9 digits of the Medispan NDC number to match up with Meditech's dictionaries. As NDC numbers have been "reused" over time (OTC's seem to be the biggest culprits), these first nine digits may now be part of a whole different drug entity. He also states we should be expecting notification of a DTS to address this shortcoming, and that Medispan is working on a new file layout for their files. That's the really interesting part, as the Medispan NDC numbers are already 11 characters long. Sounds like a spin job to me... Alan

I'd like to hear from a site that is utilizing MM.PHA and has the NDC on file for the actual drug on the shelf - you know, perpetual (or is that perceptual) inventory at it craziest! The theory is that if they are certain the NDC's are right, and if there is still wrong data on wrong drugs...that blows up the whole thing once again. I've also heard that this is one of the reasons MT is "recommending" the 11 digit format NDC in the main field, with the 10 digit format moved to the alternate field...but don't you need BMV to access that field? The related ingredients associated in the Generic Name dictionary are used only as a reference when coding a patient with a genericallergy to ask the user "Do you want to code the patient with these related ingredient allergies as well?" Also, we are in contact with Medi-Span about this issue. The specialist at Medi-Span is out for the day but will return tomorrow.
