Posting for a colleague:

The lab and surgery are in the midst of an FMEA on how to best improve
the flow of specimens from surgery to the lab. One of the ideas that
came up was to modify in some way the tracking method the coast
facilities are using for surgical specimens coming to GSRMC. The
thought is to use something similar as an OE order that would create a
"Tracking" specimen number for each specimen being submitted. A barcode
label would be generated and put on the specimen. When it got to the
lab, the lab would "receive" it similar to how we receive clinical
specimens.

What I would like you to do for us is to ask the Meditech List Serve to
find out how other labs are tracking surgery to lab specimens. Any help
you could give us would be really appreciated.
