Subject: RE: Utilizing the ORM module for scheduling/medical necessity
checking

We use Meditech's Operating Room Module (Client Server) for scheduling
and documenting surgery cases for all patient types.

1. The visit is coded after discharge or after the patient is
departed so we do not use the 3m Checker.
2. We use the operating room's scheduling module for scheduling
cases. We do not use the CWS part. We have dedicated schedulers in the
operating room. Once the patient is scheduled a notification prints to
our Pre-Access department to pre-register the patient. (Our Pre-Access
department and Community Wide Scheduling department are one in the
same).
3. We do not screen for Medical Necessity before the procedure.
Procedures are coded after the patient is discharged or departed.
Medical Necessity screening does take place on pre-operative testing for
Labs, X-Rays and EKG's. (These would be two separate accounts).
4. For routine outpatients that are scheduled the Schedulers /
Pre-Access Department does a pre-screening for Medical Necessity. The
actual screening and signing of the ABN takes place once the patient
presents to the hospital for the test.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Joyce Ferdon

Subject: Utilizing the ORM module for scheduling/medical necessity
checking

Good morning,

Your contact information was given to me by Tim Krieger, Director of
Information Systems here at Northern Hospital of Surry County. As you
know, we here at NHSC are in the very beginning stages of our ORM
implementation process. I need to see if you can assist me with a few
questions if you don't mind.

Although we do have the Community Wide Scheduling application at our
facility, we do not utilize this in our surgery area or our Day Surgery
area. In addition, checking procedures for medical necessity is done
manually at this time.

1. We are interested in implementing the automated 3M checker on
the pc's in the OR/SDC area.
2. We are interested in knowing how scheduling is done in the ORM
module and if you utilize CWS with this or not.
3. We are interested in knowing also if you do checking for medical
necessity in the OR/SDC area and if so...how?
4. And...combining the two areas of medical necessity checking and
scheduling...do you combine the two areas?

Although we want to implement the automated process for checking medical
necessity in these areas...we are trying to decide if it would be wise
to wait until we are LIVE with the ORM module so that this can be done
in conjunction with the scheduling capabilities of the module.

Thanks for your assistance,
