Prior to eMAR, linked orders were primarily to benefit Pharmacy. That allowed us to ensure that all related orders were discontinued together (Demerol + Phenergan, TPN + Lipids, NTG Patch + Remove Patch, etc.).
With eMAR, the order links functionality is tied to med administration, primarily benefiting nursing. Only those meds that are supposed to be ADMINISTERED together can be linked. The decision to link has to be made on a case by case basis during order entry and is somewhat more important for prn meds than for routines. For example, if you supply lisinopril and HCTZ components instead of a combo Zestoretic, they are still most likely to be scheduled for same-time administration whether they are linked or not (although linking still helps with the dc order). On the other hand, with a prn order for Demerol + Phenergan there are no scheduled administrations and only a link will prompt the nurse to give both meds. If so, doesn't linking them cause issues? When we were going up with the Emar, pharmacy was looking at linking orders together so that when they dc'd one, they would get prompted to dc the other. For example, Nitro patch and the Nitro patch off orders. But that wouldn't work on the Emar because nursing gets prompted to process Linked meds when scan one of the meds. If someone has it working with the EMAR, I would like to hear how you did it so nursing gets prompted for linked meds when they should and don't when they shouldn't. Something on an individual med level? -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Thompson, Jeff Sent: Wednesday, December 20, 2006 8:25 AM To: MEDITECH-L; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [MEDITECH-L] Morning Dose Different than Evening Dose I REALLY think this should be 2 different orders. We do so and then link them so they are next to each other on the MAR. Jeff Thompson, R.Ph.
