Depending on what you're encoding into the Bar Code you could switch it to Subset C of Code 128 and that will result in a shorter bar code. To use subset C you should have an even number of Numeric Characters. If you have Alphanumerics intermixed this makes it harder to do but not impossible. If it's something like a unit number with a leading prefix you can change to subset C in the middle of the bar code just past the Letter prefix. The command to switch subsets tend to be hardware specific so without knowing your hardware it's hard to help much further...
