Laurie:

We have just begun to use SQL Server Reporting Services.
We are using them in kind of an unusual way. What we
do is build everything in Business Intelligence
Development Services. We can design the report that
environment. We then use VB .NET to execute the
reports via a scheduled job, render them into Excel, and
email them to the appropriate parties. In this scenario,
the reports and distribution are all kept together in
one solution.

We did very much the same thing in the past with Crystal
Reports. However, Crystal is a bit of a nightmare when
it comes to rendering in Excel. It has a nasty habit
of adding unwanted empty columns if you don't have
every field lined up just so. It is also very inflexible
should you want to add fields or change your SQL query.
These things can be done, but you have to jump through a
lot of hoops. In fact recent versions of Crystal have
taken to greying out the SQL queries so you can't edit them.
We also get into constant version conflict issues with
Crystal. The Microsoft solution is far from perfect, but
way better than what we have been working with.

The more typical way of using this tool would be to use the
Report Manager web based application to build the reports,
set up subscriptions, security, etc. We intend to use
this approach as well. We just have not gotten through the
whole learning curve yet.

All in all, we are quite happy with this free reporting
solution.

By the way, we are using SQL Server 2005 for these services.
