G'Day all!
I am working with a site that is implementing POM. We've run across an
issue with the one-time medication orders. Most medication orders that
are entered in ED are entered with a sig of either NOW or ONCE, and a
schedule of ONE. As expected, adding the schedule of ONE makes the order
active for 1 minute only.
The site uses Omnicell (profile) as their medication dispensing system,
and some programming has been done on the Omnicell system to allow the
one-time orders to be available at the station for longer than a minute to
give the nurse time to remove the med. Sound like a good plan right?
Here's where the problem is. If a physician realizes a change needs to be
made, or God forbid, the order was entered under the wrong patient, the
medication order is still available in Omnicell, because the physician
can't change or cancel that order. Also that order continues to show up on
the eMAR if it's not given because the system is waiting to a dispensing
to be completed.
Does anyone have a work around for this? I have posed the question to
Meditech, but haven't gotten any answers.
Your experience and assistance is appreciated.
