We have a written policy regarding access to patient records (which includes a person's own record), and we do not allow employees access to their own records except by written request (as for ALL patients) via Medical Records/RIM. Our stance is that accessing patient medical records can only be done for work-related reasons, and there is no work-related reason for you to view your own record, but you are welcome to request copies of your medical record through proper channels. It's well understood and accepted by staff, and monitored by monthly HIPPA and security audits.
