I do not think IT forces anything on anyone, IT is not required for the
nursing process, it is a method/tool for helping with this process and
especially in Patient Safety issues...Med admin, Blood,
transplants,etc...

IT responds to the needs/requests of administration/QA/Risk
Management/PHA dept among others.

IT cannot force Nursing to do anything.

We as health care providers have not done so well over the years without
IT and these methods of decreasing the risk factors for our patients.

The bottom line in this ongoing discussion is there is no such thing as
a hardware solution............

What works for one unit/floor may not work for the next unit/floor. You
may need a mixture of equipment, desktops/COWS/handheld
devices/Scanners,etc...

I have never seen a single piece of equipment that fits every caregivers
needs (even on the same floor, when they do the same job....)

Good Luck,

Subject: RE: [MEDITECH-L] COWs vs. PCs in the room for BMV

I agree with Kenny in that IT should not be in the way of a nurses
process. If IT is required of the nurse then it should be made easy to
function as to not interfere with work. Especially not adding more
responibilities like going to get equipment to do thier job or assuring
something is plugged in or not. Should always be available where ever
the need to access IT is. My personal opinion rought from the
expierience of trying most everything else. Yet I think there is an
exception to this thinking, and that is if administration, the
physicians, nursing management and the nurses agree on an IT structure.
That operation also needs to be held accountable and measureable so that
it is the standard used and can be monitored for improvement. The
problem with the acception is that monitors and quality assurance of the
IT system takes FTEs which seem to be hard to come by these days both in
nursing and in IT. Mark Champion
