We recently switched from another vendor's barcoded medication administration
product to BMV. Our previous system used handhelds for documentation. I thought
the transition would be difficult for the nurses, but it actually went
smoothly. The handhelds were convenient, but unreliable, so the nurses were
frustrated with them. I did some pre-implementation work with the nurses to
convince them that there would be trade offs with this change, but the benefits
made it worth it. Some of the benefits of Meditech over our old system was:

1) No more paper MAR's to print for the chart each day-the MAR will
automatically archive.
2) If MAR information needs to be retrieved, it would be much easier to find in
Meditech than looking at page after page of the paper MAR's.
3) Any PC at the nurses station can be used to acknowledge med orders with BMV.
They no longer had to retrieve a handheld from the charging cradle in the med
room and take it to the chart.
4) No more typing by tapping on that little handheld screen; a keyboard is used
for BMV.
5) Nurses could document in the nursing module while passing meds. They could
not do that with the handhelds since they were only used for the med
administration application.
6) Less scrolling to see an order. With our old system, the nurse could not
read the entire order without scrolling down and to the right to view it on the
small screen.
7) On the units where COW's were going to be used, the nurse could withdraw
hours of meds for the patients he/she was caring for and place them in a locked
COW, so there was less running back and forth to retrieve meds.
8) A more reliable platform. They no longer have to check and recheck to make
sure that documentation was on the MAR. With BMV, they can see this immediately.

The only complaint I've had about BMV is that they miss the handhelds when
documenting a prn med on the units that use COW's for documentation, but most
of the nurses have told me that they much prefer BMV to our old electronic
system. My advice is figure out what the advantages will be in switching and
then sell it to the staff before implementation.

Subject: [MEDITECH-L] Looking for contacts using Pha,BMV,CPOE

For many reasons we are considering returning to Meditech's pharmacy
system, also utilizing Nursing & BMV and eventually POM. We will be coming
off a system that allows the use of a small handheld with multiple functions
and all the bedside safety checks (scanning meds, patient, etc.) Nursing is
concerned for their work flow and feel using a COW or some portable pc will
be difficult to manage. We would like to talk to others who use most if not
all of the above mentioned products. We are looking at how well the process
works, the satisfaction level of staff, the ease of use, etc. Any
information you are willing to share will be appreciated. Thanks in
advance.
