If you can use the NURSING Status Board, it already has the visual alert for similar or same last names on a unit, it colors the name in yellow I believe.
I believe Joe C wrote something like this also, if I am not mistaken?
You could write a custom report looking at your current census and group
the similar names together and display those on the screen?
You can use attributes to do this, I would guess look at last name
field, using string extraction for the first 3-4 letters of the last
name and then send warning to the screen?
For blood transfusions, I would think you would be bar coding/scanning
the BBK product and the patient's wristband, not chosing the patient
from the MT name field?
We use a query on the BB Unit issue cds to check/validate the patients
account number by bar coding it off the BBK label into this query on the
BB Unit issue screen.
BBK label and or the Type and Screen req (see below)...
FOR BBK ID (SCREEN BB QUERY-QUERY =LABPLC)
LABPLC 1 1 PATIENT CHART LABEL CONFIRMATION SAME 34 Y
*
BBPOSID 2 1 POS ID: SAME 9 Y
BBINSP 3 1 UNIT INSPECTION: SAME 18 Y
Enter/Edit Attributes: LABPLC

In the Pharmacy app, I have added "pop-ups" to the PHA.PAT frag that
will display a message for a "Pediatric Patient", "Latex Allergy", or
same last name. I'm thinking there must be a way to add these types of
"pop-ups" in other apps as well.
Best of luck - Kevin.

Subject: [SPAM] [MEDITECH-L] PATIENT ALERTS
Hi, All,
Wondering if anyone has a customization or has devised a clever
mechanism for alerting users as they select an inpatient in the Meditech
system that there is another inpatient with the same last name? We have
a failure mode and effects analysis team working on issues associated
with blood transfusions, and they feel that this could help minimize
errors in this arena. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks....Sheryl
