We are working on the challenge of capturing the charges for observation
patients, including the injection charges, hydration charges , etc. In
the ER we are doing this wothout difficulty partially becasue we are
automated with EDM. We are not automated on the regular nursing units
yet and we do not have a dedicated observation unit; our OBS patients
can be placed in any floor. This makes it more difficult because the
nurses are caring for different types of patients with different
documentaiton requirements. The things wwe are struggling most with for
the charges is the start and stop times documented on minibags and large
volume fluids. We have start times on our large volume fluids but no
stop times and on the mini bags we only document on the MAR so have
administration time but no exact start and stop time.
If you are charging for these items on Observation patients are you
willing to share how you are doing it. I would also be interested in
whether you have a dedicated OBS unit.
