Here's what I got from our Bacti Supervisor.... Here's how we handle MRSA and VRE'S: We created a separate organism for each of these (different mnemonics from Staph aureus and other enterococci). We also created a prompt and attach it directly to the organisms. The prompt is to log whether growth is noted on the vancomycin and oxacillin plate (Is Va (vancomycin) and Ox (oxacillin) no growth?). In the Vitek if the organism is VRE or MRSA it is sent to expert. This allows us to determine if the results were contaminated or if it is a true MRSA (VRE). If the oxacillin and vancomycin plates match the MIC results the organism is sent to Meditech as Staph aureus or Enterococcus faecium. The name is then changed in Meditech to reflect the results. Once you change the name in Meditech then you move the MIC results in the Delete/Move Susceptibility Data screen from Staaur to Staaurm. Be careful when you choose organism mnemonics because on the Antibiogram reports only 6 alpha letters show. I have ENTFAC (Enterococcus faecium) and ENTFACR (Enterococcus faecium).
Hope this helps!! Take Care Kathy Gale Y. Do you create separate organisms (Methicillin Resistant Staph aureus, Enterococcus faecalis VRE, Enterocuccus faecium VRE) in addition to normal organisms? Do use chartable procedure prompts for MRSA and VRE which are attached to Staph aureus, E. faecalis, etc, that are only resulted when MRSA or VRE is confirmed? How do you handle these organisms on your microbiology analyzers (Vitek or Microscan)? Thanks in advance?
